Runner perspectives

Selected summaries of public runner reviews. These describe the editions and distances noted, and experiences may change.

LeFriec loved the five-borough crowds and smooth start transport in 2019. Her cautions include the long wait before racing, hard surfaces, late hills and a lengthy walk out of the finish area.

Typical race weather

November in New York City

Average daytime high
11.9°C
Average overnight low
6.6°C
Average monthly precipitation
101 mm

November is cool by day and colder overnight. A layer for the start and a warm change of clothes after finishing can make the cooler parts of the day more comfortable. Average daily highs are 11.9°C and overnight lows 6.6°C. Average precipitation totals about 101 mm over the whole month. Rain preparation is sensible, but the total does not give the chance or timing of rain during the race. National Weather Service Central Park records show that November snow has occurred, although many recent Novembers had none or only a trace; this is station history rather than a race-day prediction. These are historical regional averages, not a forecast or race-hour temperatures; the coast, hills and start line may differ.

What to wear

  • Racing: consider a technical T-shirt with shorts or light tights; removable sleeves or a thin long-sleeve layer may suit a cooler forecast.
  • Waiting at the start: bring a removable warm layer and, if rain is forecast, a rain shell or poncho. If the start-time forecast is cold, consider light gloves and a hat or headband that you can remove.
  • After finishing: keep a dry top and an extra layer in your finish bag.
  • These are editorial clothing suggestions. Check the forecast close to race day and adapt to your own comfort.
